Surgical Resection of the Small Intestine

Abstract
During the past 3 years from 1970 to 1972, resection of the small intestine was performed surgically in 87 cases at Seoul Red Cross Hospital.
The results were as follows:
1. The sex ratio was 58.6% in male and 41.4% in female.
2. The incidence of resection was most common in the age of between 21 and 30.
3. The causes of resection were intestinal strangulation (58.6%), diverticulum (10. 1%), tumor or cyst (8.1%), traumatic perforation (8.1%), typhoid (6.9%), fistula or disruption (4.7%), and tuberculosis (3.4%) in descending order.
4. Adhesion or bands were most common and 45. 1% of 51 cases of strangulation.
5. The cases of previous operation were 30 of 87 and appendectomy occupied the leading position (50%).
6. Resection of the ileum was 72, jejunum 13, and duodenum 2 in number.
7. Massive resection (more than 150 cm.) was 3, wide resection (50-150 cm.) 14, moderate
resection (10-50 cm.) 43, and minimal resection (less than 10 cm.) 27 in number.
8. All the cases of adhesion or bands, intussusception, mesenteric artery thrombosis and typhoid
were found on the ileum.
9. Five patients died within 30 days after operation and the death rate was 5.7%.
